CanCare is embarking on its 30th year of bringing hope to cancer patients and their caregivers. As we look towards the future, we remain committed to expanding our network of volunteers and widening our impact in the cancer community.

Since CanCare’s start in 1990, we have learned a great deal about how to effectively provide the support that founder Anne Turnage envisioned as she faced cancer and watched peers experiencing cancer struggle to maintain hope. To ensure that all CanCare volunteers continue to be thoroughly equipped to provide support to cancer patients and their caregivers, we have honed our Volunteer Training curriculum. To promote the consistent delivery of this curriculum and grow the number of qualified trainers to implement it, we have built our Train the Trainer program. We have developed our database and matching processes to ensure that enduring connections are made between cancer patients and their caregivers and volunteers. Our Hospital and Treatment Center program has grown and matured as we have developed best practices for integrating volunteers into medical treatment teams. Similarly, our partnerships with congregations have expanded, yielding a growing number of committed volunteers and community collaborations.

In short, we have spent many years building and refining the CanCare model to foster hope and support as effectively as possible. We want communities across the country to benefit from the hope and support cultivated by extensively trained CanCare volunteers. Bringing CanCare to more communities will facilitate more face-to-face interactions between volunteers, patients and their caregivers. Just as importantly, as CanCare grows and our volunteer base expands, so does the diversity of cancer types represented by our volunteers, including more rare and emerging forms of cancer. The broader and more diverse the CanCare volunteer base is, the better equipped we are to provide support to cancer patients and their caregivers.

Our Affiliate Onboarding Process is a roadmap to starting a CanCare affiliate in your community. We invite you to learn more about becoming a CanCare affiliate by reading the CanCare Start-Up Tool Kit linked below. We encourage you to also take a look at the CanCare Affiliate Checklist, a tool that will walk you through the process of determining whether your community is ready to become an affiliate.
