The Legacy of People Helping People

By: Kris Kerlin, Director of Mission Impact

As we celebrate the birthday of CanCare and 34 years of service on April 12th, we also celebrate National Volunteer Appreciation Month and all the lives that have been touched by our volunteer CanCare family! Our family is special because of each of you that are part of it! From the original action of one woman, Anne Turnage, a stage 4 colon cancer survivor diagnosed in 1970, a legacy of people helping people has grown into a national outreach with 1:1 matches, onsite healthcare visitations and online support groups.

Our survivorship community is a place of hope and inspiration for all those facing cancer. We share the of hope and inspiration that comes from the will and generosity of spirit to share the cancer journey with one another because we know that we are stronger together. You are making a difference in the lives of people!  We cannot thank you enough.

We will be celebrating CanCare’s birthday online with a special birthday party. Please come and bring a guest and introduce them to CanCare. We know there are many people that need CanCare that have not heard of us yet. Please spread the word and invite someone to the party, Friday, April 12, 12-1PM Central time. Click HERE to rsvp!

We are growing to reach even more people who need us and we’re looking for people to join our CanCare family. If you, or someone you know is a caregiver (loves someone who has cancer) or is a cancer survivor who is 6-12 months post-treatment, we would love for them to become a CanCare volunteer. Our next training is scheduled for April 25-26. Click HERE to complete the volunteer application and to find out more.

Meet Larry Latimer!

A true beacon of hope and compassion, Larry is not just your ordinary volunteer—he's a force of positivity and support in the cancer journey!

With 20 years of law enforcement experience and 18 years in the insurance field under his belt, Larry brings a wealth of expertise to the table. But what truly sets him apart is his unwavering commitment to making a difference in people's lives.

In Loving Memory of Bernie Fields

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Bernard "Bernie" Fields.

A survivor of T-cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, Bernie's journey with CanCare began when he joined CanCare in October 2012 as part of Training Class #59. From that moment, he became an unwavering advocate for our mission. Throughout the years, Bernie's dedication shone brightly as he served multiple terms on the Board, where he chaired both the Corporate Relations and the Client & Volunteer Experience committees.

Even in the face of adversity, Bernie's resilience was awe-inspiring. His battle with Thymoma and subsequent Thoracotomy only reinforced his determination and strength. Bernie's sharpness of mind and unwavering spirit left an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to know him.

Bernie's commitment to CanCare was unparalleled. He tirelessly shared our mission of providing support to those facing cancer, ensuring that no one felt alone in their journey. His efforts in recruiting volunteers and leaders have left a lasting impact on our organization.

In remembrance of Bernie, let us continue to carry forward his legacy of compassion and service. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
