1. One-on-one, long-term emotional
support for cancer patients and family members
Every CanCare volunteer has been personally touched by cancer,
either as a survivor of cancer or a supporter of a loved one with
cancer. CanCare provides free one-on-one, long-term emotional
support for the individual and family members for as long as needed.
Individuals requesting support are matched with CanCare volunteers
who have experienced the same type of cancer or similar circumstances.
2. Outreach visits at hospitals
CanCare volunteers regularly visit cancer patients in Houston area
hospitals, helping patients and family members feel cared for
beyond their medical needs.
3. Volunteer training and continuing
education
CanCares 17-hour training is designed to prepare volunteers
to help their referrals cope with the physical, emotional, psychosocial
and spiritual aspects of their cancer experience. Following this
training, volunteers may attend continuing education and support
opportunities to learn more about cancer and the needs of cancer
survivors and their families.
4. Information and Resources
CanCare provides one-time listening support, valuable information
and referral to other resources available for those undergoing treatment
for cancer.
5. Community Outreach and Education
CanCare participates in corporate and community health fairs and
conferences and welcomes speaking opportunities to reach cancer
patients and their families and health care providers. CanCare also provides cancer
support programs and resources to companies to enhance their
employee assistance and wellness programs, as well as, congregations to support their congregants.
